Ethnography Paper Proposal

For my ethnography, I am interested in researching the subculture of the residents of the nursing home Mala Strana. When I first found out about our ethnography project, the nursing home was the first thought that came to my mind. I am curious how they live each day; I wonder what they do for fun, what they eat, and what they think about. My research would be conducted here, in New Prague, at the Mala Strana nursing home.
I have done projects associated with the residents of Mala Strana in the past, and I found the experience to be quite enjoyable, but at the same time, sad for the residents. I guess I have made some preconceptions of my own: the residents are lonely and depressed because of the fact that they cannot care for themselves and are away from their family. Living in a nursing home would surely make me miserable and depressed. Personally, I think elderly people are merely not given a second glance in our fast pace world today, and I want to take the time to hear their stories. I want to know where they grew up, who they loved, their happy moments, their sad moments, and how their lives went. They are people too, and I know if I was concluding the moments of my life, I would want to share them with anyone willing to listen. I want to be that person.
I already know that Mala Strana would let me observe and interact with the residents because they love company, and I have volunteered there before. I also happen to know a friend who works there who could serve as my broker. Finding time to study and research doesn’t seem to be a huge problem and my after school activities are coming to an end. I hope researching this subculture will give me some advice and a better outlook on life and maybe provide some happiness for those who have already lived.
